The Impact of Stroke


Essential Characteristics of Stroke :

Characteristic neurological deficit with sudden onset – the face may have dropped on one side, the person may not be able to smile or their mouth or eye may have dropped, may not be able to lift both arms and keep them there because of arm weakness or numbness in one arm, their speech may be slurred or garbled, or the person may not be able to talk at all despite appearing to be awake. In the United States, stroke remains  the third medical cause of death, despite the decrease in incidence in the last 30 years. More than this, in Romania, every 20 minutes a person is having a stroke. Precise reasons for this decline are not yet clarified, but it seems that a significant part is played by health education.Through improving knowledge about the role of risk factors ( hypertension, nutrition , smoking, diabetes etc) and by increasing awareness regarding the huge impact on quality of life of these individuals, stroke could be prevented.

In case of a stroke, the neurological deficit that occurs depends on the vessel involved and on the extent of the collateral circulatory vessels deficit.  As the vessel caliber is biger, the size of the lesion and the neurological impact increases. Cerebral ischemia causes the release of excitatory compounds (neuropeptides) that can increase calcium influx into neurons, thus leading to their death and potentiating the neurological deficit.
